Winx on track to crack $22 million in earnings after Racing Victoria increase prizemoney

THE increases to prizemoney for Racing Victoria feature races should see Winx smash through the $22m earnings barrier this spring. The Cox Plate is now worth $5m with $3m going to the first place getter. We’re banking on Winx going first-up into the Chelmsford Stakes, second-up in the George Main Stakes, then a lead-up run in Melbourne before going into the Cox Plate fourth-up.

Just on the prizemoney increases to the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Victoria Derby. What’s it going to change? Nothing. It’s an arms race at the top. It’s just about saying “we’ve got the richest 2000m turf race”.

If the Queen Elizabeth Stakes was worth $3m the Cox Plate would’ve only gone up to $4m. “We’ve seen Victoria prizemoney go up on the back of NSW leading the way … but we’ve got to keep an eye on costs,” Chris Waller said.
