“I really felt it (the pressure) this week, more than I’ve felt it before,” Bowman admitted after the race.
“I’ve been following racing for 60 years. I’ve never known a day like this, a build-up like this,” veteran caller Bruce McAvaney said.
A number of massive bets were placed on Winx to win, including the biggest ever of $201,200 at $1.22 to win $44,264 on Saturday morning.
It came from the same bettor who had backed Winx in 11 straight races before today, making $153,637.50 profit from around $1.2 million in bets.
The bet surpasses the previous record, set by the same punter, of $170,000 at $1.16 in the Turnbull Stakes last start. Several other bets of $100,000 were placed today on Winx.
Winx’ win odds of $1.22 did not move at all following the record bet.
